Can anyone recommend a video playback software that will support both HD sound formats? I've tried with VLC and my receiver never plays anything other than stereo or extended stereo. I have two Nvidia GTX 680 cards and I have the card configured to 7.1 sound through windows sound configuration. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You can leave the windows sound config at Stereo, that has nothing to do with bitstreaming. I don't use VLC, but getting HD bitstreaming simply involves setting the codec correctly. http://assassinhtpcblog.com/wmcandmbsetup/#guide2

Unless I'm mistaken, there is no free way to play DTS-HD MA. LAVF has support for Dolby TrueHD, but you need something like ArcSoft's DTS decoder to get DTS-HD MA support.

This is true for the Majority of free/opensource players out there as they are DirectShow based. Non DirectShow players (VLC, XBMC) will not use the DirectShow filters but instead use their own internal decoders.

So I downloaded LAV from the link above provided by bryansj. Thanks btw :-) I installed LAV, configured like the instructions said and no change on my receiver. It either says PCM or Stereo. When I was playing the video file through VLC, I checked my task manager and saw that LAV was not running in the background. Should I see that or does it not show up as a background program running?

LAV doesn't have its own process, but it is customary for it to display icons in the system tray, unless you've disabled the icons in the options menu.Quote:

As I said above, VLC uses it own internal decoders and not DirectShow decoders (filters). LAV is a set of DirectShow filters. You will need to use a DirectShow based player (NextPVR, MPC-HC, MediaPortal, etc) in order to use LAV filters. As vladd said, it isn't doing anything. VLC uses its own decoders and is not compatible with other codecs. You need to use something like Media Player Classic to use external filters.

No. Neither can LAV. You need a payware decoder to play it on your PC, such as ArcSoft's. I think Nero may sell one, too.

Last time I looked VLC doesn't support bitstreaming of HD Audio codecs therefore no amount of tweaking will get it working. VLC runs on its own propietary codecs, therefore the installation of LAV will have no effect.
In response to your first question - try XBMC it can bitstream both and there is no need for additional codec installations.

The OP isn't trying to decode DTS-HD MA, he just wants to bitstream it to his AVR. Now that you have LAV installed you need to use a player other than VLC. I just use LAV with the internal WMC player to bitstream. Keep following the guide posted. I think if you simply opened Windows Media Player it will bitstream if your LAV was setup correctly per the guide.

I know, that;s why I suggested xbmc. Certainly it should work in Windows Media Player, if LAV is set-up correctly.

Thanks for the tips guys. I've been using XBMC and it's pretty sweet. All my movies show up nicely in the movies section along with the poster and everything. And, I'm even able to use my 360 Controller to navigate through it. I have run into an issue though. Anytime I try to play a movie with DTS Master Audio, it goes in slow motion and is really choppy. If I change the audio from HDMI to Analog, it goes away. I tried uninstalling LAV thinking that it could be interfering in some way with XBMC but it still happens. Any explanations as to why this is happening?

Just a FYI. Dependant on the version of XBMC being used, these options will only be available if you have the settings set to either 'Advanced or Expert'.

Got another question about XBMC. Is there a way to add a tab for TV Shows like I have for movies? I like going into the movie folder and having all the info displayed along with a poster of the movie. Didn't know if there was a way to do that with TV Shows. Thanks
